Scottish Manufactured Exports Estimates: 2nd Quarter 2009

Scotland's Chief Statistician today announced the release of the Scottish Manufactured Exports Estimates for the Second Quarter of 2009. This quarterly publication measures growth, in real terms, of overseas exports by manufacturing companies located in Scotland.

The main findings are:

  • Scottish manufactured export sales fell by 0.7 per cent in real terms in the second quarter of 2009 and fell by 8.5 per cent over the year to the end of June 2009
  • Over the quarter the greatest declines were observed in chemicals, coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (-6.0 per cent), wood, paper, publishing & printing (-12.0 per cent), engineering & allied industries (-1.0 per cent), metals & metal products (-5.9 per cent), and textiles, fur & leather (-7.3 per cent). In the same period, growth in exports were observed in the food, drink & tobacco industries (+5.5 per cent), and other manufacturing (+0.9 per cent)
  • Over the year to June 2009 export sales fell in all industries including engineering & allied industries (-8.0 per cent), food, drink & tobacco (-8.0 per cent), metals & metal products (-20.7 per cent), chemicals, coke, refined petroleum & nuclear fuel (-5.7 per cent), textiles, fur & leather (-17.0 per cent), wood, paper, publishing & printing (-11.3 per cent), and other manufacturing (-2.4 per cent)
