Scotland is continuing to benefit from its economic partnership with China, First Minister Alex Salmond announced today.
Speaking at a reception to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the People's Republic of China, the First Minister said that much progress has already been made since his visit to the country in April.
This includes:
- the University of Edinburgh and Peking University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding committing to collaborate on stem cell research
- Hong Kong Electric international continues to explore opportunities for energy investment in Scotland
- a groundbreaking wind measurement device created by Scotland's Sgurr Energy has been launched in the Chinese market
- over 5,000 students from China are currently studying in Scotland
- the Scottish Prestige Golf club is encouraging China's one million golfers to play at Scotland's leading courses
- rapid progress has been made towards protecting Scotch Whisky in China with Chinese legislation expected
First Minister Alex Salmond said:
"The 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China is an important date for everyone in China and for the significant Chinese population in Scotland.
"On my first visit to China earlier this year, I was impressed by the numerous economic success stories and the commitment of the Chinese Government to further progress.
"China is one of the most important forces in the world economy, generating one third of global economic growth on a purchasing power basis since 2000.
"Our far reaching, focused programme of engagement with China is already generating long term benefits for Scotland.
"This important partnership supports the Scottish Government's economic recovery programme - expanding trade, providing real benefits for jobs and businesses and promoting Scotland as a world leader in education and innovation."
