School Estates Statistics, 2009

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published a range of statistics relating to core facts about the school estate in Scotland.
These statistics include information on the size, value, condition, capacity and running costs of the school estate.
The main findings are:
- Total capital expenditure rose by £43 million to £429 million.
- 17 per cent of schools were given the overall building condition rating of A (good), 58 per cent were rated B (satisfactory), 21 per cent were rated C (poor) and two per cent were rated D (bad).
- The number of pupils on the school rolls in September 2008 of schools rated in a good or satisfactory condition in the 2009 school estates data was 526,000 (77 per cent of pupils).
- 18 per cent of mainstream schools were operating at 90 per cent or higher capacity while 17 per cent were below 50 per cent capacity. The average level of occupancy in 2009 was 70 per cent, this remains unchanged from 2008.
