Ofcom report reaction

06/08/2009

In response to the Ofcom Communications Market report for Scotland, Culture Minister Michael Russell said:

"I am extremely disappointed both by the low level of expenditure on programmes for viewers in Scotland, and also by the low share of network programming made in Scotland and will be seeking urgent clarification from the broadcasters on these figures.

"This report underlines the findings of the independent Scottish Broadcasting Commission and the need for the dedicated Scottish digital network, which would not only improve choice in public service broadcasting in Scotland but substantially increase the volume of programmes commissioned here.

"Viewers in Scotland need, value and deserve a dedicated Scottish network and these figures show that rapid action is now essential on the promises from the major public service broadcasters to significantly increase network production in Scotland.

"Workers in Scottish production industries and Scottish audiences are, I believe, fed up with the repeated failure of UK broadcasters to fully honour solemn promises made to Scotland within acceptable timescales. I will be seeking an urgent meeting with Ken McQuarrie at BBC Scotland to get action not excuses."
