Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon today announced the re-appointment of a number of NHS Board Chairs across NHS Scotland.

Ms Sturgeon said:

All of the Chairs concerned are extremely committed to public service and have demonstrated a clear understanding of the issues being faced within NHSScotland. Their wealth of experience and knowledge have been invaluable to their Boards and I look forward to continuing to work together with them in the vital task of improving the health of the people of Scotland."

AYRSHIRE AND ARRAN NHS BOARD

Professor Bill Stevely CBE

Professor Bill Stevely was appointed as Interim Chair of NHS Ayrshire and Arran in July 2006. He retired in 2005 as Principal of the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. He now lives in Ayrshire where he was born and brought up. He holds a ministerial appointment as a member of the Board of Skills Development Scotland, for which he receives an annual remuneration of £6,240. He is also a member of the Board of the Scottish Agricultural College and a member of the Council of the Open University. His previous experience includes service on the National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting for Scotland, the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council, Scottish Enterprise Grampian and Chairmanship of the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Professor Stevely was appointed his CBE in 2004.

This re-appointment will be for a period of two years from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011.

This post is part-time with a time commitment of 3 days per week for which the annual remuneration is £29,172.

GRAMPIAN NHS BOARD

Dr David Cameron

Dr David Cameron is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and operated a Food Safety Consultancy and Training company based in Aberdeen from 1990 - 2009. Previously he was a Senior Lecturer in Food Microbiology, Food Science and Nutrition at what is now The Robert Gordon University. He has been a non-executive Board Member of NHS Grampian since January 2005 and was Chair of the Aberdeen City CHP Committee from June 2005 until appointed Chair of NHS Grampian in December 2007. He also holds ministerial appointments as a Member of the Scottish Food Advisory Committee of the Food Standards Agency, for which he receives an annual remuneration of £5,319 and as a Board Member of The Food Standards Agency, for which he receives an annual remuneration of £10,238. Throughout his professional career he has been actively involved with The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) and was President of REHIS in 1993 and again in 2004.

This re-appointment will be for a period of two years from December 1, 2009 to November 30, 2011.

This post is part-time with a time commitment of 3 days per week for which the annual remuneration is £31,356.

LANARKSHIRE NHS BOARD

Mr Kenneth Corsar

Ken Corsar is a teacher by profession and taught in several secondary schools in West Central Scotland. He joined the Education directorate of Strathclyde Regional Council in 1975 and held various posts in Strathclyde before being appointed as Director of Education for Glasgow City Council on the reorganisation of local government in 1995. He worked for Glasgow City Council until 2002. He also served as the Scottish Director for the National Deaf Children's Society and currently Chairs in a voluntary capacity the Advisory Committee for the Scottish Sensory Centre. He joined the Lanarkshire NHS Board as a non-executive member in 2003 and became Chairman in 2005. Mr Corsar does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

This re-appointment will be for a period of four years from November 1, 2009 to October 31, 2013.

This post is part-time with a time commitment of 3 days per week for which the annual remuneration is £29,172.

ORKNEY NHS BOARD

Mr John Ross Scott

Hawick-born journalist John Ross Scott, had - before being appointed Chair of NHS Orkney in December 2007 - enjoyed 23 years of public life. From 1980-2003 he served as Convenor of Scottish Borders Council, Chairman of the South Of Scotland Transport Partnership, Chairman of the Waverley Rail Partnership, Chairman of Scottish Association of Direct Labour Organisations Highways Committee and was one of two Scottish members on the UK Road Safety Advisory Panel. A former Scottish Liberal Democrat Transport spokesman (1998-99), he also served as Honorary Provost of Hawick (1999-2002) during the Millennium celebrations and devastating foot and mouth outbreak. He was a key player in the South of Scotland European Partnership, stood twice as a Liberal Democrat on the South of Scotland list and once as a Westminster Liberal Democrat candidate in Dumfries. A past chief reporter and health correspondent with the award-winning 'Southern Reporter', and former Editor of the 'Hawick News' he moved to Orkney in 2003 when appointed first editor of the new and now highly acclaimed weekly newspaper 'Orkney Today'. He resigned from this post to take on his NHS Orkney responsibilities but currently - as a freelance journalist -edits 'Living Orkney' magazine. He also serves on the national Technical Advisory Group on Resource Transfer (TAGRA) and is a member of the North Of Scotland Planning Group Chairs and Chief Executives Committee. Mr Scott does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

This re-appointment will be for a period of two years from December 1, 2009 to November 30, 2011.

This post is part-time with a time commitment of 3 days per week for which the annual remuneration is £26,988.

NHS Boards are responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community in each of the regions it serves.

These Ministerial re-appointments were made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, John Ross Scott has stood as a prospective Liberal Democrat candidate for the Orkney constituency. None of the other appointees have been involved in any political activity within the last five years.
