New generation of Gaelic speakers

03/08/2009

Immediate action to create a new generation of Gaelic speakers is the only way to save the language, according to Minister for Gaelic Michael Russell and Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop, speaking today during a visit to the studios of Stornoway-based Gaelic broadcaster MG Alba.

To address the issue, Ms Hyslop and Mr Russell announced that the Scottish Government and Bòrd na Gàidhlig will work closely over the next three months to identify the critical steps required to deliver such a challenging outcome. By the end of this year Mr Russell will publish an action plan of radical steps which will deliver an increase in Gaelic speakers and users.

Minister for Gaelic Michael Russell said:

"There is legitimate concern about the condition of Gaelic in Scotland. This Government shares that concern and is committed to tackling it head-on. But there is not the luxury of time. We must take action and we must take it now.

"Despite strong advocacy, much innovation and strengthened structures over recent years, the fact is that there has not been a corresponding increase in the number of people using the Gaelic language.

"This Government wants to see a secure and sustainable future for Gaelic in Scotland. The only way we can deliver this is to increase the number of people using Gaelic in everyday life. That requires a refocusing of efforts and it requires commitment from all parties.

"Travelling through the Western Isles over the past few days, everyone I have spoken to agrees that good progress has been made but that further, more radical steps must be taken to address the fundamental issue. We are determined to take those steps."

Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Fiona Hyslop said:

"This initiative has many strands but it is clear that education at all levels has a key role to play. With a strong educational push, Gaelic can be moved forward.

"Therefore I hope that all education bodies will recognise that their input is crucial. I want them to work constructively to ensure we stand ready to equip the next generation of Gaelic speakers with the skills, knowledge and confidence required to use Gaelic in their day-to-day lives.

"This is the kind of commitment that will make a huge difference and will be vital for success in the pressing timescales and urgent circumstances we face."
