13/07/2009

Scotland's Chief Statistician today released the Summary of the Scottish results for the Higher Education-Business and Community Interaction (HE-BCI) Survey 2007-08.

The HE-BCI survey is undertaken annually across the UK Higher Education Sector to collect data on strategies and activities pursued by institutions during the academic year to commercialise knowledge. The publication includes a summary of the Scottish Results of the HE-BCI survey for the academic year 2007-08.

The main findings are:

Total income to Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) from knowledge exchange increased by 7 per cent from £320.5 million in 2006-07 to £341.4 million in 2007-08. The component parts of total income changed as follows:

  • Income generated from collaborative research increased by 15 per cent from £98.8 million in 2006-07 to £113.8 million in 2007-08
  • Income from contract research increased by 17 per cent from £83.1 million in 2006-07 to £97.0 million in 2007-08
  • Income generated by consultancy contracts increased by 21 per cent from £32.5 million in 2006-07 to £39.2 million in 2007-08
  • Income generated from Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses increased by 5 per cent from £46.7 million in 2006-07 to £49.2 million in 2007-08
  • Income generated from facilities and equipment related services increased by 1 per cent from £18.9 million in 2006-07 to £19.0 million in 2007-08
  • Income generated from regeneration and development programmes decreased by 38 per cent from £26.0 million in 2006-07 to £16.1 million in 2007-08
  • Income generated by Intellectual Property (IP) decreased by 52 per cent from £14.6 million in 2006-07 to £7.0 million in 2007-08
  • The number of new patent application filed increased from 173 in 2006-07 to 229 in 2007-08
  • Patents granted have increased from 61 in 2006-07 to 88 in 2007-08
  • Total spin-offs established in 2007-08 (both with and without HEI ownership) has increased from 30 to 32 since the previous year

In future years, in line with the original aims of HE-BCI, data collection is being embedded in core HEI data processes managed by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). Future data collections will therefore benefit from the increased robustness associated with dedicated data processes but will still allow reporting on a consistent range of indicators.
