Influenza A H1N1 update

23/06/2009

Scotland has 40 new laboratory confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) today, increasing the country's total to 686.

The new cases are in: Greater Glasgow & Clyde (34), Lanarkshire (2), Lothian (2), Tayside (1) and Ayrshire & Arran (1). Of the latest cases, 39 are non-travel related and one is related to travel.

One previously confirmed case, in Highland, has been reclassified as negative for influenza A.

Currently there are four people with influenza A being treated in hospital.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said:

"The spread of the H1N1 virus is not unexpected and mirrors in Scotland what has been seen in the rest of the UK and many other parts of the world.

"Our preparations for dealing with the H1N1 outbreak are among the best worldwide and we are focused on working closely with our public health colleagues across the NHS to limit the spread of the outbreak.

"The public can also help contain any spread by adopting simple hygiene procedures, such as regular hand washing and using tissues if coughing or sneezing.

"As well as our first-class preparations to deal with H1N1 we also have in place excellent procedures for monitoring and mapping the situation in Scotland so we can provide an accurate picture of the influenza A situation here.

"It remains important to stress that in the majority of cases those people affected by H1N1 do not have symptoms that are causing any major clinical concern."
