Update on A(H1N1) virus

10/06/2009

Scotland has a further 47 new confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) today, taking the country's total to 311.

The new cases are in Greater Glasgow and Clyde (41), Ayrshire and Arran (1), Highland (4) and Lothian (1) NHS Boards. All are non-travel related.

Ten patients are in hospital. There is one additional admission since yesterday and two people have been discharged.

Confirmed cases in three primary schools and one high school in the Greater Glasgow and Clyde health board area have prompted risk assessments by public health officials.

As a result children from St David's Primary and Cochrane Castle Primary in Johnstone, P3 and P7 pupils from Lorne Street Primary in Kingston and S5 and a number of S6 pupils from Port Glasgow High School

have been asked to stay at home for seven days and issued with Tamiflu.

Three healthcare workers are among the confirmed cases. This takes the total number of healthcare staff with the virus to 11.

Additionally results are pending on a possible case, an inmate at Barlinnie Prison. The prisoner has been given Tamiflu and is currently in isolation.

There are now 522 possible cases under investigation, 15 of these are travel related and 507 are non-travel related.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon will update parliamentary colleagues on the latest situation tomorrow morning. She said:

"As expected, the number of confirmed cases in Scotland is continuing to rise. However the vast majority of these remain confined to particular areas.

"We are still pursuing a strategy of containment to slow down the spread of the virus. Where we have increased spread of infection and increased numbers of cases, we have been discussing how to refine that strategy.

"This government has been working hard to make sure that as a country, we are as fully prepared as possible for what lies ahead, and I would like to thank our public health teams for their excellent response.

"I would continue reassure people that most cases are mild and to urge that everyone takes sensible precautions, follow hygiene advice and contact NHS 24 or your GP if you develop flu-like symptoms."
