Discussing Scotland's Future

30/03/2009

The views of Scotland's ethnic minority communities are to be the latest heard as part of the country's ongoing National Conversation.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will be in Glasgow today where she will participate in the first of a series of events aimed at involving Scotland's ethnic minorities in the debate over the country's constitutional future.

Set up by the Council of Ethnic Minorities Voluntary Organisation in partnership with the Scottish Government, similar events are planned for Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness.

Speaking before the event Ms Sturgeon said:

"It is vital that the voices of Scotland's ethnic minorities are heard in the National Conversation.

"That is why we are holding these five events to ensure that everyone can have their say on the kind of country they want Scotland to be.

"The kind of Scotland I want to live in, is civilised, fair and inclusive and provides equal opportunity and choice for all its people.

"We are confident in our belief that independence is best for Scotland. But we respect the fact that there are other views. We believe it is important that, whatever their view, people have the opportunity to take part in a discussion which will ultimately shape their future.

"I look forward to hearing the views expressed at the event in Glasgow as we work to encourage the greatest possible participation in Scotland's National Conversation."
