Criminal Justice Social Work Statistics 2007-08

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published statistics on Criminal Justice Social Work Statistics, 2007-08. Figures show that the use of most types of community penalty orders have increased compared to 2006-07. The number of Drug Treatment and Testing Orders have decreased since the previous year.

The main findings are:

Community Service Orders

  • A total of 6,202 Community Service Orders (excluding Probation Orders with a requirement of unpaid work) were made in 2007-08, an increase of 4 per cent on the 2007-08 figure of 5,937.
  • 3,762 Community Service Orders were successfully completed in 2007-08, an increase of 5 per cent from 3,569 in 2006-07. A further 2,063 were terminated in 2007-08 for other reasons including breach, review and transfer out of area.
  • 2,161 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of Community Service Orders in 2007-08, an increase of 14 per cent compared with the 1,892 breach applications in 2006-07.

Probation Orders

  • A total of 8,751 Probation Orders (including those with a requirement of unpaid work) were made in 2007-08, an increase of 4 per cent compared to the level of 8,404 in 2006-07.
  • The majority (58 per cent) of terminations of Probation Orders were due to successful completions.
  • 3,400 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of Probation Orders in 2007-08, a 7 per cent decrease compared to the total of 3,650 in 2006-07.

Supervised Attendance Orders

  • A total of 4,438 Supervised Attendance Orders were made in 2007-08, up 46 per cent from the total of 3,047 in 2006-07. This increase reflects the introduction of mandatory SAOs.
  • 1,685 Supervised Attendance Orders were successfully completed in 2007-08 (an increase of 1 per cent). A further 1,285 were terminated in 2007-08 for other reasons including breach, review and transfer out of area.
  • 1,311 breach applications were made to the Courts in respect of Supervised Attendance Orders in 2007-08, an increase of 17 per cent from the 2006-07 total of 1,125.

Drug Treatment and Testing Orders

  • A total of 601 Drug Treatment and Testing Orders were made in 2007-08, down 14 per cent from 696 in 2006-07. There were 209 breach applications and 491 terminations of DTTOs in 2007-08, decreases of 34 per cent and 11 per cent respectively on the 2006-07 figures.

Social Enquiry Reports

  • A total of 42,492 Social Enquiry Reports (including 6,099 supplementary reports) were submitted by Local Authorities to the Courts in 2007-08, up 3 per cent from the 2006-07 total of 41,359.

Diversion from Prosecution

  • A total of 956 Diversion from Prosecution cases commenced in 2007-08, a decrease of 16 per cent from the 2006-07 total of 1,133 cases.
