Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon today announced a new non-executive member appointment to the Scottish Ambulance Service Board.

Cllr David Alexander is the SNP's current Convenor for Local Government and Councillor of 20 years standing. In his political career in Local Government that included a six year stint as leader of Falkirk Council, Cllr Alexander also served for a period of five and a half years as a member of Forth Valley NHS Board, at a time of the complete restructuring of Acute Services in Forth Valley. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

The appointment will be for a period of four years from December 1, 2008 to November 30, 2012.

This post is part-time with a time commitment of 8 hours per week for which the annual remuneration is £7,748.

The Scottish Ambulance Service is responsible for the strategic planning of health services and the development of measures to improve the health of the community throughout Scotland.

This Ministerial appointment was made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, Cllr Alexander has obtained office as a local councillor, canvassed and spoken on behalf of the Scottish National Party, acted as a political agent and held office within his local branch of the party.
