Minister criticises fuel price rises

30/07/2008

Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell today described the news that Scottish Gas is to increase fuel prices for gas and electricity customers as 'shameful'.

Prices for gas customers will increase by 35 per cent and for electricity customers by nine per cent. Prices for dual fuel customers will increase by 25 per cent.

Mr Maxwell said:

"This latest price hike beggars belief and is shameful. It is a kick in the teeth for those already reeling from soaring energy prices.

"The Scottish Government is deeply concerned about the effect that fuel prices are having upon households in Scotland.

"This Government will continue to press energy companies and UK Ministers to take action to minimise the impact of high fuel prices, particularly on Scotland's most vulnerable people."
