NHS Quality Improvement Scotland Board

Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing Nicola Sturgeon today announced a new non-executive member appointment to the NHS Quality Improvement Scotland (QIS) Board.
Mr John Orr is a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. He is currently President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Chairman of the Scottish Audit of Surgical Mortality. He is a member of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges and serves on a range of UK surgical boards. He has previously served on the QIS Healthcare Governance Standards Steering Group and a number of working parties for the Clinical Standards Board for Scotland. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.
This appointment will be for a period of four years from August 1, 2008 to July 31, 2012.
This post is part-time with a time commitment of 8 hours per week for which the annual remuneration is £7,748. In the case of Mr Orr, this will be paid to the employing Board to compensate for the time devoted to NHS QIS business.
NHS QIS is a special health board which works with members of the public, patients and healthcare staff to translate the latest scientific research, expert opinion and patient experience into practical improvements that can be implemented in the health service.
This Ministerial appointment was made in accordance with Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland (OCPAS) Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Within the last five years, Mr Orr has not been involved in any political activity.
