Report on employability after prison

17/06/2008

A new report highlights examples of the kind of learning initiatives that are helping people in prison prepare for life back in society.

The joint report by HM Inspectorate of Education and HM Inspectorate of Prisons - A review of good practice in learning, skills and employability - lists the kind of factors that help to transform the lives of prisoners and also identifies the factors that inhibit success.

Senior Chief Inspector of Education Graham Donaldson said:

"Learning and developing new skills is a vital element of reducing offending behaviour, promoting rehabilitation and preparing prisoners for life outwith prison on release.

"When delivered effectively, learning, skills and employability can make a real difference to the lives of prisoners and to the communities they live in when released."

Chief Inspector of Prisons Andrew McLellan said:

"This report highlights the kind of work going on in our prisons to provide appropriate education and training so that prisoners can improve their prospects, and help them obtain fulfilling and sustainable employment when released."
