Continued support for two key international development organisations was announced today.
Speaking at the Europe and External Relations Committee, Ms Fabiani outlined the Government's new International Development policy with new country priorities and confirmed ongoing support to Malawi.
This new core funding of £147,000 for the Network of International Development Organisations (NIDOS) and £158,000 for the Scotland-Malawi Partnership (SMP) will support a key element of the Government's international development policy in building the sectors capacity to raise awareness, network and exchange information.
Minister for External Affairs Linda Fabiani said:
"It's important that our international development organisations are able to share information and build relationships as they grow. This new funding for NIDOS will support networking, information exchange, and most importantly the dissemination of information on best practice within the field.
"I am also pleased to provide new core funding of £158,000 for the SMP allowing them to strengthen information exchange and networking opportunities for Scottish organisations working in Malawi and to promote public awareness of development and of the important work Scottish project sponsors are taking forward.
"Scotland has a very special relationship with Malawi and our new International Development policy makes this very clear. We have ring-fenced at least £3 million per year for our work in Malawi and we will work with the Government of Malawi looking at key areas where we can build upon this strong relationship.
"The work of NIDOS and the SMP will add real value to the way in which we operate over the next three years and I look forward to seeing the real and meaningful difference they will make to people in Malawi and in other developing countries."
The International Development Policy comprises six distinct elements:
- Malawi Development Programme
- Sub Saharan Africa Development Programme
- Fair Trade Scotland Programme
- Core Funding for Scottish-Based Networking Organisations
- Responses to International Humanitarian Crises
- Indian Subcontinent Development Programme

NIDOS is a network of 70 International Development organisations with a base in Scotland. Member organisations are united in their focus on tackling poverty with communities around the world and raising awareness in Scotland of international development.
The allocation to NIDOS will support them to maintain and develop their current programme of services and to provide advice and assistance to member organisations and the wider international development sector in Scotland.
