Teachers in Scotland 2007

19/03/2008

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published a range of statistics relating to teachers in Scotland's publicly funded schools.

Some of the main findings are:

  • The total number of teachers based in primary, secondary and special schools, or visiting specialists was 52,970. This was 151 more than in 2006
  • Falling pupil rolls meant that the pupil teacher ratio improved from 13.3 in 2006 to 13.1 in 2007
  • There were 1,514 teachers in the pre-school sector, 172 fewer than the number estimated in January 2007. Problems with the quality of the previous pre-school data may account for some of this difference
  • The average (mean) age of teachers again fell slightly, from 43.6 to 43.5

National statistics are produced by professionally independent statistical staff.
