Successful inward investment

05/03/2008

FMC Technologies in Dunfermline were congratulated today by First Minister Alex Salmond on having achieved record-breaking production levels in 2007.

FMC Technologies, headquartered in the US is a leading global provider of technology solutions for the energy industry and other industrial markets. The Dunfermline facility designs and manufactures products for the oil and gas industry.

In December the company achieved its highest ever annual output for subsea trees (equipment compromising a series of valves and controls designed to control the flow of oil and gas in a subsea oil well).

Since then the company has played a key role in securing the world's largest subsea contract for Total Pazflor - which will see the first-ever deployment of subsea separation systems in deepwater West Africa. Dunfermline will be responsible for the design and manufacture of 49 subsea trees, wellheads and other support equipment.

The First Minister said:

"FMC Technologies is an excellent example of how engineering design and manufacturing are succeeding in Scotland. Their achievements prove that we have the skills and the resources to let inward investment flourish.

"We should all be proud of the hard work and dedication of the 600 highly skilled staff employed here in Dunfermline. Their efforts and abilities are among the best of Scotland's tremendous assets.

"Here in Scotland the business climate is improving - with our Economic Strategy setting direction, the Council of Economic Advisers and National Economic Forum providing expert advice to improve our economic performance, and reformed and refocused enterprise networks supporting growth.

"For the oil and gas industry in Scotland there has never been a better time. Scotland is at the heart of a truly global sector with new markets emerging, such as China and India. Altogether the North Sea has produced the equivalent of just over 35 billion barrels of oil and gas equivalent. And it could still have at least 25 billion more to come over the next 40 years.

"Growth has brought with it rapid technological change. FMC Technologies has recognised the exciting opportunities this offers and is proving that investment in Scotland brings real rewards. I hope its success will inspire others to take advantage of our competitive edge."

Speaking of the First Minister's visit to the Dunfermline facility, David Currie Managing Director of FMC Technologies UK said:

"It is a pleasure to welcome First Minster, Alex Salmond on-site.

"We are proud of what we have here in Dunfermline. In 2007, we celebrated a number of successes from the opening of our multi-million pound expansion programme, the shipment performance for subsea trees to securing the worlds largest subsea contract for Total - one of our major customers.

"Our success is based on a continuing focus on customers and providing solutions to their needs, and is attributable to our people, their excellent capabilities in performing to a high level and meeting the challenge of change.

"While successful, we recognise challenges still to be met. We have a vision to continuously improve on providing innovative solutions for our customers, coupled with superb execution. This will also involve greater opportunities for our employees and deliver improved results as an organisation.
