Caledonian Environment Centre

26/02/2008

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead today visited the Caledonian Environment Centre at Glasgow Caledonian University.

The Centre specialises in innovation in a variety of waste and environmental areas. They receive £500,000 Scottish Government funding to develop markets for recycled products. They also work with local authorities on designing and optimising recycling strategies.

Mr Lochhead said:

"In January I outlined plans for a zero waste Scotland, including tough new targets to increase recycling and reduce landfill. Dealing with waste sustainably is fundamental to the future of Scotland and the future of the planet.

"Organisations such as the Caledonian Environment Centre will have a role to play in helping deliver this and I want to thank them for the valuable work they do.

"In particular we need to look at markets for harder to recycle materials such as plastics and the Centre will be doing more work in this area."

Mr Lochhead continued:

"I would also like to congratulate Glasgow Caledonian University for being voted the second best in the world for the experience of its overseas students. They have beaten off competition from institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge and Yale and this should be celebrated."
