Final estimate of cereal and oil seed rape harvest 2007

10/01/2008

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published final estimates of the 2007 Scottish cereal and oilseed rape harvest.

The final estimate of cereal production for the 2007 harvest is 33,000 tonnes lower than the provisional estimate published on 11 October 2007. This is mainly due to lower barley yields reported in the Cereal Production Survey compared with the initial estimates.

These final estimates indicate that, compared with the 2006 harvest :-

  • Total cereal production decreased by 46,000 tonnes or 1.7 per cent to 2.620 million tonnes. There was a 1.4 per cent increase in total cereal areas and a 3.1 per cent decrease in overall cereal yields
  • Total barley production decreased by 20,000 tonnes or 1.2 per cent to 1.658 million tonnes. The 1.5 per cent increase in areas was countered by a 2.6 per cent decrease in yields
  • Wheat production decreased by 13,000 tonnes or 1.5 per cent to 832,000 tonnes. The 3.1 per cent increase in areas was countered by a 4.5 per cent decrease in yields
  • The production of oats decreased by 12,000 tonnes or 9.0 per cent to 124,000 tonnes, mostly due to a reduction in areas
  • Oilseed rape production increased by 15,000 tonnes or 12.0 per cent to 137,000 tonnes. This was due to an 8.7 per cent increase in areas and a 3.0 per cent increase in yields

The production estimates are based on crop areas from the June Agricultural Census and crop yield estimates from the Cereal Production Survey.

Crop yield estimates from the Cereal Production Survey are based on a sample size of about 350 holdings in Scotland
