Funding for freshwater fisheries

07/12/2007

The Fisheries Trusts will benefit from an additional £1.2 million to develop and implement sound, sustainable and scientifically-based fisheries management plans.

The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment Richard Lochhead and the money will be used for the monitoring and assessment of salmon and other freshwater fish.

Mr Lochhead said:

"Angling is extremely important to Scotland's rural economy, but will only remain so if managed sustainably.

"To support the freshwater fisheries sector to develop sustainable fisheries in Scotland this Government is willing to commit substantial funding, which today's announcement demonstrates.

"Game and coarse angling supports 3,000 jobs and is worth more than £120 million to the economy.

"I am determined that the sector will continue to play a significant part in developing our rural communities."
