Pupils receive exam results

07/08/2007

More Scottish pupils than ever will receive exam results today and most will get good news.

Around 156,000 candidates studied for qualifications this year - that's 5,000 more learners than last year. Entries for National Courses have increased, especially at Access and Intermediate levels. Pass rates have also improved slightly.

Education Secretary Fiona Hyslop said that today was an important day for pupils, parents and teachers.

She said:

"I want to congratulate pupils all over Scotland for their achievements today. I know what it takes to get here - months of dedication and hard work from young people, their teachers and the vital support of their parents and friends.

"It is a testament to the talent and abilities of our young people that so many have clearly aimed so high and achieved so much. We need to harness that ambition to make Scotland smarter and ensure that we can compete in the global economy.

"Our young people recognise the importance of good qualifications and are successful in their studies. This bodes well, both for their future and the future of Scotland.

"For those who have not received the news that they hoped for today, there is advice and support out there to guide them through the many options that can help them realise their goals."

The Careers Scotland exam results helpline - 0808 100 8000 - can offer advice on different courses and opportunities available. The SQA candidate helpline is also available on 0845 278 8080.

The current National Qualification courses began to be phased in from August 1999. There are five levels of award, designed to provide challenging qualifications for pupils of all abilities:

  • Access (available at three levels)
  • Intermediate 1
  • Intermediate 2
  • Higher
  • Advanced Higher

Standard Grade results are also included in the exam results.
