First Minister Alex Salmond has today written to the new Prime Minister to congratulate him on his appointment.
In his letter, Mr Salmond told Gordon Brown that he would 'bring many outstanding personal qualities to the job' and that he would welcome the opportunity for an early meeting.
The FM's office has also called the PM's office to say that Mr Salmond would like to speak to Mr Brown at the earliest convenient opportunity to personally congratulate him.
The full text of the FM's letter is:
Dear Gordon
Congratulations on your appointment. You will bring many outstanding personal qualities to the job, and I have no doubt that you will give of your best. I look forward to working closely with you in the best interests of Scotland, and, to that end, would very much welcome the opportunity for an early meeting.
I wish you every success in your new role.
