Olympics roadshow in Scotland

31/05/2007

The official 2012 London Olympics Roadshow comes to Scotland this summer as part of a tour taking in 27 destinations throughout the UK over the three months of June, July and August.

This will include two stops in Scotland - at the Outsider Festival at Rothiemurchus, near Aviemore, on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24, and the Blair Atholl Horse Trials on Friday, August 24.

The London 2012 branded bus will be the centrepiece of the tour and each stop will feature hands-on activities to encourage everyone to take part in sport, as well as information about how to get involved in the 2012 Games.

Stewart Maxwell, Minister for Communities and Sport, said:

"I hope the Games will inspire a generation of young people throughout Scotland to get involved in sport and benefit from the lifelong rewards of a healthy and active lifestyle.

"The 2012 Roadshow is a good way to raise the profile of the Games and promote sport to Scots of all ages."

With the bus there will be 'challenge areas' for people to compete against the clock using exercise machines. Professional sports advisors and coaches will be on hand to encourage people to take part in the challenges or find out more about sport in their area.

In addition, the National Lottery will be providing a "Dream Statistics Zone" where members of the public can compare their vital stats with successful sports men and women to find out what they would be good at.

The show kicks off on June 15 at the Greenwich Sportathon in London, with an event aimed at primary school youngsters from one of the five boroughs which will host the 2012 competition.

It will end on August 29 at Stoke Mandeville five years to the day before the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Paralympic Games. The events to be visited include county youth games, county shows, music and beach festivals and major and community sporting events.

The Scottish Steering Group - comprising representatives from organisations including Scottish Enterprise, VisitScotland, sportscotland, EventScotland, the Scottish Arts Council, COSLA and BBC Scotland, Volunteer Development Scotland, CBI Scotland and the Scottish Chambers of Commerce - has been set up to maximise benefits to Scotland accruing from the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.
