Historic agreement on climate change
20/02/2007
All European Union Member States have agreed to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent by 2020.
The agreement was reached today at the Environment Council in Brussels.
Welcoming the statement on behalf of the Scottish Executive, Deputy Environment Minister Sarah Boyack said:
"Today's agreement is a vital step in the international battle against climate change.
"By unilaterally setting a target to exceed our share of Kyoto obligations, Scotland has already shown what can be done. This response demonstrates a European commitment to changing our ways.
"Scotland will continue to be a leader in the international fight against climate change, tackling the biggest environmental threat facing future generations."
