New judge appointed

Her Majesty the Queen, on the recommendation of the First Minister, has appointed Colin Malcolm Campbell QC to be a Senator of the College of Justice in Scotland.
Mr Campbell was educated at Dundee University where he graduated with a first class Honours degree in 1975. He joined the Faculty of Advocates in 1977 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1990. Mr Campbell held the office of Dean of the Faculty from 2001-2004.
Mr Campbell will fill a vacancy in the Outer House of the Court of Session which arises as a consequence of the retiral of the Rt Hon Lord Abernethy.
This appointment arises from the retiral of The Rt Hon Lord Abernethy who left office at the end of January 2007. The Hon Lord Wheatley was appointed in his place to the Inner House of the Court of Session, thus creating a vacancy for an Outer House judge which is to be filled by Mr Colin Campbell. After graduating from Dundee University Mr Campbell tutored in Scots Law between 1975-1977 before becoming a full-time lecturer between 1977 and 1979. Between 1984 and 1990 he was Standing Junior Counsel to the then Scottish Development Department, latterly specialising in planning matters. He served as Dean of the Faculty between 2001 and 2004. Between 2002 and 2005 he was a member of the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland.
The Board submitted their recommendation to the First Minister on January18, 2007.
The salary of a judge is £162,000.
