Mike Ewart will be appointed to the position of Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service when the current Chief Executive Tony Cameron retires next April.

Mr Ewart (54) has previous experience in the Justice Department and was the first Chief Executive of the Scottish Court Service when it became an Agency in 1994. He is currently Head of the Scottish Executive Education Department.

Mr Ewart has a First Class Honours degree from Cambridge University and joined the Scottish Executive in 1977 as a fast stream entrant. He began his career in the Education Department then worked on Criminal Justice Policy and Roads and Transport following which he was appointed Assistant Private Secretary to the then Secretary of State for Scotland George Younger, from May 1981 to October 1982.

From October 1982 to October 1983 he held the Civil Service Fellowship in Politics at Glasgow University. His next assignment was to the Health Department in 1983 and in 1987 he returned to Education. Between 1991 and 1999 Mr Ewart worked in Scottish Courts Administration. When the Scottish Court Service secured Agency status in 1994 he was its first Chief Executive. In 1999 he returned to the Education Department first at head of group level and from 2002 as Head of Department.

Mr Ewart is being assigned to the post at his existing grade in SCS Pay Band 3 which has a minimum of £98,000 and a maximum of £205,000.

Senior Civil Service posts may be filled by assignment, internal or external competition. This assignment was a management decision taken by the Permanent Secretary.
