Deputy Minister for Education and Young People Robert Brown today announced the appointment of three new members to the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).

Dr Anne Haddow - a family carer for her 26-year-old daughter who has profound and multiple learning disabilities. She is a committee member of several statutory (a number of which are hosted by Fife Social Work Department) and voluntary organisations. She is also vice chair of Fife's Princess Royal Trust for Carers and a family member of PAMIS, an organisation which works in partnership with people with profound learning disabilities. She currently holds a ministerial appointment as a member with the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care for which she receives £7,670 per annum in remuneration.

Professor Bart McGettrick - an independent consultant specialising in education and professionalism in the workforce. He has over 30 years' experience as a senior member of staff in teacher education institutions and is a former Principal of St Andrew's College. He is chair of several national and international groups, as well as boards of governors of a number of schools. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

Stan Smith - retired this year as Chief Social Work Officer and Head of Social Services Policy at Aberdeen City Council. He has over 30 years' experience in social work and delivery of social services. He does not hold any other ministerial appointments.

The appointments will be for three years and run from October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2009.

These posts are part-time and attract a remuneration of £7,671 per annum for a time commitment of five days per month.

The SSSC is an Executive Non-Departmental Public Body established under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001. It is responsible for improving the quality of social services and protecting the public by strengthening and supporting the professionalism of the workforce and raising standards of practice. The SSSC regulates the social work and social care workforce, which covers more than 138,000 people.

Ministerial public appointments are made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Dr Anne Haddow, Professor Bart McGettrick and Stan Smith have not been involved in any political activity within the last five years.
