£11 million European funding

A total of 76 projects in the West of Scotland will benefit from further European funding it was announced today.
Beneficiaries include a project to train wireless technicians, IT skills for the disadvantaged people in North Glasgow and getting young people into youth work.
Announcing the investment, Deputy Minister for Enterprise Allan Wilson said:
"I am delighted to announce this latest round of funding for the West of Scotland.
"European funding continues to play an important role in the area's development and I am pleased as ever to see that a wide variety of projects are benefiting this time around.
"There are a number of projects aimed at enhancing IT skills, which will be vital for allowing people to take advantage of the opportunities in this area.
"Wireless computing is a particularly exciting area and one project is receiving £52,289 to train 36 people in installation, maintenance and servicing.
"Another project will receive £149,908 to enable SMEs in West Dunbartonshire to compete globally through enhanced use of IT.
"I would also like to highlight a project in South Lanarkshire aimed at creating 12 trainee youth worker posts with a vast range of skills including establishing relationships and promoting equality.
This round of funding is made up of £3.3 million European Regional Development Fund and approximately £7.7 million European Social Fund. This brings the total of European Structural Funds committed in the West of Scotland during this programme to around £305 million.
European funds consist of two main kinds of investment. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) provides assistance for people to start or grow businesses; to develop sites and premises for businesses; to upgrade tourism facilities; and to support community economic development. The European Social Fund (ESF) supports training for people working in the region or looking for jobs. It is intended in particular to help people who are long term unemployed; young job seekers; and those excluded from the labour market.
