Funding for national cycle network

20/06/2006

The sustainable transport charity SUSTRANS today announced £8 million of investment over the next two years to develop Scotland's national cycle network.

The pledge came as Transport Minister Tavish Scott opened the new West Loch Lomond Cycle Route.

The opening of the new cycle path is one of a number of events happening across Scotland this week as part of National Bike Week.

Mr Scott said:

"The eight million pounds committed to cycling today by this devolved government will open up more routes, bringing greater improvements to the cycle network across Scotland.

"Cycling is a great way for people to get active, keep healthy and see our fabulous countryside - it is also good for our planet.

"Schemes such as the Balloch to Tarbet route encourage more people to cycle and walk in a safe environment. This new route along the banks of Loch Lomond will give people a safe, car-free route along which they can enjoy some of the best scenery Scotland can offer.

"With schoolchildren about to start their summer holidays, and visitors arriving, wanting to see the best of Scotland, I would encourage all of them to cycle safely."

SUSTRANS

The sustainable transport charity is to receive new Executive funding of £4 million per annum for 2006/07 and 2007/08 for its work to maintain and upgrade the National Cycle Network (NCN).

Already SUSTRANS have been provided with over £9.5 million for their work on the network. 1219 miles of the total 1530 miles of cycle paths have been completed, which is just under 80 per cent of the NCN.
