The statistical bulletin Housing trends in Scotland: quarter ending December 31, 2005 was published today presenting quarterly information on public sector house sales, new house building and local authority lettings and evictions.

The main points are:

  • New house building: 5,525 new dwellings were started during the period October to December 2005, 119 (two per cent) more than during the same period in the previous year. 5,716 dwellings were completed during October to December 2005, 674 (11 per cent) less than during the same period in 2004.
  • Sales of public authority dwellings: A total of 2,631 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period October to December 2005, a decrease of 632 (19 per cent) on the same period in 2004.
  • Lettings and evictions: During the quarter October to December 2005, there were 7,706 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 535 (six per cent) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 255 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 42 (20 per cent) more than during October to December 2004.
