Rail performance scheme extends to Inverness

16/05/2006

The rail performance monitoring regime used for all central belt lines is now operating on stations north of Perth to Inverness and work is under way to extend it to the whole of Scotland.

SQUIRE (Service QUality Incentive REgime) deals with issues such as ensuring accurate passenger information and cleanliness of trains and stations.

Welcoming the roll-out, Transport Minister Tavish Scott said:

"Quality and reliability are essential factors in a modern rail network fit for the 21st Century. Train services that do not match up to the high level of standard passengers should expect are simply not acceptable.

"The work being done by the inspection teams, and the commitment by FirstScotrail to deliver high quality services will help drive forward continued improvements. Improvements I want rail passengers to expect - not be surprised by."

Gordon Hannah, SQUIRE Operations Manager at Transport Scotland, said:

"This scheme has already helped to make great improvements to rail services in other parts of the country. As a member of the SQUIRE team I can confirm that we are excited to be starting inspections on this line. We take great pride in our work and are determined to help make significant improvements for rail passengers in the area."

The stations on the Perth to Inverness line are: Dunkeld and Birnam, Pitlochry, Blair Atholl, Dalwhinnie, Newtonmore, Kingussie, Aviemore, Carrbridge, Inverness.
