Code to tackle odour nuisance

New powers to minimise odour nuisance and improve the quality of life for people living near waste water treatment works in Scotland have come into force.
The Statutory Code of Practice on Odour Control will strengthen existing controls by placing an obligation on Scottish Water to reduce unpleasant odours. Local authorities will be duty bound to regulate and monitor their compliance.
Deputy Environment Minister Rhona Brankin said:
"Odour nuisance is a small but locally significant issue in a number of areas across Scotland.
"This statutory code has been produced by the Scottish Odour Steering Group following a full consultation which allowed the public along with the relevant organisations and agencies to provide their views on minimising odour nuisance.
"The production of this code fulfils a commitment to the Parliament and concerned communities to provide additional controls for both operators and regulators to minimise odour from waste water treatment works"
The Code is entitled Water Services etc (Scotland) Act 2005: The Sewerage Nuisance (Code of Practice) (Scotland) Order 2006:Guidance on Statutory Code of Practice on Sewerage Nuisance- Assessment and Control of Odour from Waste Water Treatment Works
The Scottish Odour Steering Group comprises representatives from Scottish Water, Waterwatch, Water Industry Commission, Local Authority Environmental Health Officers, Scottish Environmental Protection Agency and the Executive.
