Fisheries (Electricity) Committee

Rhona Brankin, Deputy Environment and Rural Development Minister, today announced the appointment of Mr John Gordon Jubb to the Fisheries (Electricity) Committee and the re-appointment of Mr James Cockburn as Chairman and Dr Trevor Crisp as member.
Mr Jubb, a consultant Land Manager, has been appointed for three years up to March 31, 2009. Mr Cockburn and Dr Crisp have been re-appointed for a further three years up to February 28, 2009
The Fisheries (Electricity) Committee advises Ministers and the developers of proposed hydro-electric power schemes on their possible effect on fisheries.
The committee's main purpose is to consider proposals for new hydro-electric schemes over one megawatt in capacity, with a view to advising how damage to fisheries or fish stocks might be best avoided or mitigated, and make any necessary recommendations. The Committee can also advise on smaller hydro schemes, as well as on the effects of the cooling water systems of thermal generating stations.
This public appointment was made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland.
Mr Jubb and Dr Crisp receives remuneration of £ 135 per meeting and they hold no other Ministerial Public Appointments. As Chairman Mr Cockburn receives remuneration of £185 per meeting and holds no other Ministerial Public Appointments.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. None of the appointees have declared political activity.
Members of the Fisheries Committee are appointed under the terms of the Electricity Act 1989.
The Committee is independent in its proceedings and may investigate, or advise on, matters at its own initiative or when requested to do so.
