Sport Minister Patricia Ferguson today announced the appointment of Ian Beattie, Carolan Dobson, and Kim McAully, to sportscotland.
Ian Beattie is a Chartered Accountant and currently Finance Director of Brodies LLP. His experience has been in the financial world and athletics. In the past he has been Finance Director of Royal Bank Private Equity Group, Head of Finance of Murray Johnstone, and a Non-executive Director for Scottish Athletics for 4 years. He has also consulted to the UK Athletics/UK Sport Modernisation programme and been involved in the development of the Bank of Scotland Talented Young Athletes programme. He is an experienced long distance runner, having completed more than 50 marathons and is treasurer of Central Athletic Club.
Carolan Dobson is a Competition Commissioner, as well as the Independent Investment Advisor to both the London Borough of Enfield and the Environment Agency's Pension Scheme, and a Non-Executive Director of Shires Smaller Companies plc an investment trust. Past achievements include being Head of Abbey Asset Managers' Investment Floor in Glasgow with funds under management of £30billion. She has also worked for British Waterways as Non-Executive Director where she worked closely with local authorities and helped to establish private public partnerships.
Kim McAully is an Accountant in Angus Council's Education Department and a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). She has been heavily involved in local community groups and is currently treasurer for a community website and Secretary for the Dundee branch of her professional institute CIMA.
These appointments will be for four years and will run from February 13, 2006, to February 12, 2010.
The posts are part-time and not remunerated. Board members are expected to prepare for and attend approximately six to eight Board meetings a year and may be involved in additional meetings and events. The new members hold no other Ministerial public appointments.
sportscotland is the main channel for Government funding for sports in Scotland. sportscotland is expected to lead the organisation in achieving the four aims set out in the Royal Charter. These are to encourage the general public to take part in sport, to foster the provision of sports facilities, to further the attainment of high standards of performance in sport and to promote the understanding of the importance of sport in society.
Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. Mr Beattie, Mrs Dobson, and Ms McAully have undertaken no political activities in the last five years.
