Continued efficiencies at Scottish Water

09/01/2006

Scottish Water is continuing to reduce operating costs whilst boosting capital investment and keeping customer bills at the lowest rate possible - according to figures published today.

The company's Interim Accounts for 2005-06 were published today. They illustrate the company's financial performance for the first six months of the 2005-06 financial year and show that Scottish Water:

  • operated the core business for £8.4 million less than that for the same period in 2004-05 a reduction of 8.4 per cent in real terms
  • invested £320.2 million of the £662 million forecast for 2005-06, representing an average capital investment of £53 million per month. This is an increase of £17 million per month on the previous year's figures

Deputy Minister for Environment and Rural Development Rhona Brankin said:

"Delivering substantial efficiencies by reducing operating costs by more than one-third in four years is a challenging task. These accounts show that Scottish Water is on course to meet this target which is saving customers more than £2 million per week.

"This is good news for customers and more evidence that our decision to merge the three former Water Authorities and retain the water industry within the public sector is working for customers."

In accordance with the Water Industry (Scotland) Act 2002, Scottish Water is required to produce and publish annual Interim Accounts.
