Scottish Social Services Council

Two new members were appointed to the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) today by Deputy Education Minister Robert Brown. Another member was reappointed.
The new members are:
Ian Doig - an Independent Consultant, specialising in Public Finance and Management, he was previously the Director of CIPFA in Scotland (Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy), the major professional membership body in public finance and management.
Margaret McKay - Chief Executive of Children 1st, one of Scotland's leading child welfare charities. Prior to this she was Chief Executive of Children's Hospice Association Scotland and founding Director of ChildLine Scotland. Mrs McKay is also a carer.
These appointments are for three years and run from November 1, 2005 to October 31, 2008.
The reappointed member is:
Judith Midgley - a Practice Development Manager for Enable Scotland, a voluntary sector provider of services for adults with learning disabilities. A qualified solicitor and housing professional, Judith worked in housing prior to moving into the social services sector.
This reappointment runs from November 1, 2005 to August 31, 2007.
These posts are part-time, attracting a remuneration of £7671 per annum for a time commitment of five days per month. None of the appointees hold any other Ministerial appointments.
The Scottish Social Services Council is a Non-Departmental Public Body established under the Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001. The Council is responsible for improving the quality of social services and protecting the public by strengthening and supporting the professionalism of the workforce and raising standards of practice. The Council will regulate the social work and social care workforce, which covers more than 138,000 people. The Council has an annual budget of around £7.575m, which includes the Council's running costs.
These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland's Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity (if there is any to be declared) to be made public.
None of the appointees have been involved in any political activity within the last five years.
