Cereal Harvest 2005

14/10/2005

The preliminary estimate of the 2005 Scottish cereal harvest is 2.7 million tonnes, a decrease of just over 3 per cent on the previous year.

The fall in production is mainly attributable to a decrease in total wheat and winter barley production - due to a decrease in the area sown. This was offset by an increase in total production of spring oats - due to a significant increase in yield.

The figures are based on area figures from the provisional June 2005 census results and an initial estimate of crop yields. The production estimate will be finalised with the publication of the 2005 Cereal Production survey early next year.

Production estimates in thousand tonnes
20052004
Wheat838877
Barley (winter)381409
Barley (spring)14051444
Total barley17861853
Oats and others134121
Total cereals27582850
Oilseed rape111131

Wheat yields (tonnes per hectare) are provisionally estimated to be just over 1 per cent up on last year's cereal production survey results and the area sown is down by almost 6 per cent. Total barley cropped area is down by almost 6 per cent and total yield is marginally higher than 2004. The total oat area grown fell by over 8 per cent with the yield increasing by over 21 per cent giving an increase in production of almost 12 per cent. Oilseed rape yields decreased by over 7 per cent with the area grown fell by almost 8 per cent resulting in a 15 per cent fall in production compared with 2004.

Totals may not necessarily agree with the sum of their components due to rounding.
