Holyrood to stage Malawi conference

His Excellency, Bingu wa Mutharika, President of Malawi will join Scotland's First Minster Jack McConnell as keynote speakers at an international conference to be held in the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh in November.

Over two days the conference, which is hosted by the Scotland Malawi Partnership, will consider the impact of the Commission for Africa report and G8 Scotland, on the Sub-Saharan country, one of the poorest nations in the world.

It will be held on Friday November 4 and Saturday November 5. The Princess Royal will perform the official opening and it will chaired by Presiding Officer George Reid.

Other speakers will include Sir David Steel, the Secretary of State for International Development, Hillary Benn (to be confirmed) and Thandika Mkandawire, Director of the United Nation's Research Institute for Social Development.

There will be around 150 delegates, with a further 150 invited observers, many of whom will have travelled from Malawi.
