Scottish Fisheries Statistics 2004

28/09/2005

Annual statistics providing details about the volume and value of fish caught, landings by the Scottish fleet, landings into ports in Scotland and the characteristics of the Scottish fishing fleet, were published today.

The main points are:

  • The total number of fishing vessels based in Scotland remained essentially constant, from 2,395 vessels at the end of 2003 to 2,394 at the end of 2004
  • Total employment in the fish catching sector in Scotland was stable in 2004, with 5,275 persons at the end of 2004 compared to 5,276 persons at the end of 2003
  • The value of all sea fish landings by Scottish based vessels increased by 7 per cent to £300.3 million in 2004. By volume, landings by Scottish based vessels increased by 9 per cent to 427,300 tonnes
  • Scottish-based vessels landed 65 per cent by weight and 59 per cent by value of all landings by UK vessels in 2004
  • Landings into Scotland by UK and foreign vessels increased by 9 per cent, from 379,000 tonnes in 2003 to 412,500 tonnes in 2004, due mainly to a 17 per cent increase in the volume of pelagic species landed. The value of landings into Scotland increased by 11 per cent to £313 million over this period
  • Approximately 71 per cent of the total volume of sea fish landed into the UK in 2004 was landed into a Scottish port

These statistics are produced from the Executive's Environment and Rural Affairs Department's data base which records details of sea fish landings into Scotland, and landings abroad by Scottish-based vessels. They are supplemented by information from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for landings into the rest of the United Kingdom.

Provision of the information contained in this publication is a requirement of EU fisheries legislation. It is provided by vessel skippers, vessel agents and fish sellers.
