Housing trends in Scotland

Information on housing is published today in the statistical bulletin Housing trends in Scotland: quarter ending March 31, 2005.

The bulletin presents quarterly information on public sector house sales, new house building and local authority lettings and evictions.

It also contains information on public sector stock and vacancy rates, special needs housing, changes to local authority housing list, houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) and private sector grants

The main points to emerge from the bulletin are as follows:

New house building: 8,720 new dwellings were started during the period January to March 2005, 80 (one per cent) more than during the same period in the previous year. 6,998 dwellings were completed during January to March 2005, 1,731 (thirty thee per cent) more than during the same period in 2004.

Sales of public authority dwellings: A total of 2,719 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period January to March 2005, a 171 (six per cent) decrease on the same period in 2004.

Lettings and evictions: During the quarter January to March 2005 there were 8,035 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 1,564 (16 per cent) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 254 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, three more than during January to March 2004.

Houses in multiple occupation: In the year ending March 31, 2005, 1,883 applications received in respect of the mandatory licensing scheme for houses in multiple occupation. As at March 31 2005, there were 8,430 licences in force, representing an increase of 4,150 (97 per cent) over the previous year.

Housing for older people: Public authorities and housing associations provided 32,758 sheltered and 2,872 very sheltered dwellings for older people as at March 31, 2004, representing 85 (three per cent) more very sheltered units than at March 31, 2003.
