Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the body responsible for promoting and developing Gaelic, is being reborn as preparations for implementation of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act continue.

The bòrd, which is currently a limited company, will become a statutory body under the Act, taking over the bòrd's current role and retaining the existing name.

Newspaper adverts will appear shortly inviting applications to the new statutory body.

Plockton High School rector Duncan Ferguson, the current chairman, having led the bòrd through an historic period in Gaelic development has announced that he intends to step down when business is transferred to the new statutory body.

Education Minister Peter Peacock, who has ministerial responsibility for Gaelic, said:

"The bòrd's work has coincided with a time of rapid progress in Gaelic language development and a number of significant milestones have been met.

"I am grateful to Duncan Ferguson and his fellow bòrd directors for the hugely important work they have undertaken over the past three years.

"In partnership with the bòrd, we have established action groups to address the critical issues of Gaelic teacher recruitment and the development of the secondary curriculum and we have obtained the unanimous approval of the Scottish Parliament to the terms of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005.

"Duncan Ferguson and the existing bòrd members under his leadership can reflect with satisfaction on the personal contribution they have made to secure the status of Gaelic and ensuring it is in a position to thrive."

Mr Ferguson said:

"It has been a considerable personal challenge but also a great privilege to have been the first cathraiche of Bòrd na Gàidhlig, to have overseen the establishment of this first national board and to have played my small part in the historic process which has brought the first Gaelic Language Act.

"After three hectic years, I wish to demit office and, by doing so at this changeover, I hope to make as easy as possible the transition to the new body while ensuring that the core developmental work of the bòrd continues in this interim period. I wish to put on record my thanks to all at the bòrd, the minister, everyone in the Gaelic communities, learners and others for their support during my chairmanship."

The Report of the Ministerial Advisory Group on Gaelic, A Fresh Start for Gaelic, was published in May 2002 and Scottish Ministers announced in June 2002 that a Gaelic Development Agency would be established.

Bòrd na Gàidhlig, which was established in April 2003 as a company limited by guarantee, is made up of chairman Duncan Ferguson and six directors. The bòrd's main functions are the distribution of Gaelic development funding and providing advice and assistance on Gaelic language matters. The company will be wound up following commencement of the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005.

The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 establishes a statutory authority, which will be called Bòrd na Gàidhlig, with responsibility for promoting and facilitating the promotion of the Gaelic language. The chairman and ordinary members of this body will be appointed in accordance with the guidance issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland. An advert inviting applications for membership will be placed shortly.
