Probationary teachers get ready for new term

15/08/2005

Among 3000 teachers are due to start their probationary year in Scottish schools this month, as part of the government's drive to boost teacher numbers.

Today Education Minister Peter Peacock met some of the new teachers who will be taking their places in classrooms following the summer break.

He visited Ravenscraig Primary in Greenock and Alloa Academy in Clackmannanshire.

In Inverclyde, 25 teachers will start their teaching careers this month and 18 teachers will start in Clackmannanshire.

Mr Peacock said:

"Despite the fact that school rolls are falling dramatically, we're increasing the number of teachers in our classroom - and there's an army of new recruits waiting in the wings, ready to bring their skills and expertise into schools."
