Comment on public sector employment statistics

15/07/2005

The first snapshot of public sector employment in Scotland was published today.

Responding to the figures, Minister for Finance and Public Service Reform Tom McCabe said:

"These figures give us an accurate picture of the whole of the public sector in Scotland for the first time. Since devolution, there has been an unprecedented growth in resources for public services in Scotland which has delivered more teachers, police officers and nurses.

"There is no doubt public sector staff have a vitally important role to play in providing excellent services to the public and ensuring taxpayers get the best value for money. These statistics also show that our strategy to ensure that the right staff, with the rights skills and in the right numbers, working in the right way is on track.

"We want to ensure the appropriate balance of staff and resources at the frontline to ensure the effective delivery of services and we will continue to drive forward our Efficient Government agenda cross the public sector, attacking waste, bureaucracy and duplication to ensure the most efficient use of taxpayers' money."
