FM pays tribute to Scots who fought in Second World War

10/07/2005

First Minister Jack McConnell today paid tribute to the Scots who fought in the Second World War.

He was speaking in Edinburgh before taking part in the national event to commemorate the end of World War Two.

He joined HRH The Princess Royal and Adam Ingram, the Armed Forces Minister, in a series of events, including a veterans parade along Edinburgh's High Street.

Mr McConnell said:

"Today we remember the thousands of Scottish men and women who gave their lives in the world's worst conflict. Their sacrifice, and those of their families and friends, allowed future generations to live in peace and freedom. We will never forget them.

"Sixty years after the defeat of fascism, we face a different threat. But just as a previous generation of Scots stood up to evil with selfless courage so must we stand up to those who wage a war of terror against everything we hold dear."
