Practical support for Africa
24/06/2005
Scottish expertise in agri and aquaculture can help to support communities in Africa, Environment and Rural Development Minister Ross Finnie said today.
The Ministr was speaking at the Royal Highland Show at Ingliston where he met with Malawian MPs the Hon Sailes J Gulule MP, the Hon Ernest Yahaya MP, members of the Malawian Parliamentary Committee for Agriculture and Natural Resources, and Mr JJ Mussa, Malawi Ministry of Agriculture.
Mr Finnie said:
"Scotland has a world class science base in fish farming, livestock breeding and farm extension.
"The skills and training that we are developing here in Scotland can help to sustain some of the poorest parts of Africa.
"I am particularly pleased to meet with colleagues from Malawi here at the Royal Highland Show to discuss opportunities for technology transfer which can help to make our communities more sustainable."
The Malawian MPs said:
"We are looking to Scotland as a source for technology transfer in livestock, irrigation and machinery. This will help us to process our raw materials more efficiently, retaining added value in our crops, fisheries and livestock sectors. Malawi has a new land policy in place which guarantees investors security of tenure in land holdings.
"We have had a very useful discussion with Mr Finnie and are grateful to the Scottish Minister for his time and support."
