Housing Trends in Scotland

The statistical bulletin Housing trends in Scotland: quarter ending December 31, 2004 is published today with information on public sector house sales, new house building and local authority lettings and evictions.
The main points are:
- New house building: 5,255 new dwellings were started during the period October to December 2004, 491 (9per cent) less than during the same period in the previous year. 6,409 dwellings were completed during October to December 2004, 21 less than during the same period in 2003. Year on year comparisons show a gradual increase in completions, and a somewhat sharper increase for new build starts
- Sales of public authority dwellings: A total of 2,968 public authority dwellings were sold to sitting tenants in the period October to December 2004, a decrease of 519 (15per cent) on the same period in 2003
- Lettings and evictions: During the quarter October to December 2004, there were 8,360 permanent lettings of local authority dwellings, 1,581 (16per cent) less than during the same quarter in the previous year. There were 202 evictions of local authority tenants this quarter, 46 (19per cent) less than during October to December 2003
