Old Firm unite to tackle sectarianism
19/04/2005
Rangers and Celtic Football Clubs have united to drive home the message that sectarianism has no place in Scotland.
Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said both Old Firm clubs are making invaluable contributions to tackling the scourge of sectarianism.
The Old Firm Alliance was launched to highlight to young people and their parents that sectarian views cause prejudice and hatred.
It aims to positively influence the opinions and views of young people early in their lives to try to bring about real and lasting changes.
Speaking at the launch at the Keppoch Campus in Possilpark, Glasgow, Ms Ferguson said:
"The recent summit on sectarianism held by the First Minister brought together people from all corners of Scotland to tackle the scar on Scottish life that is sectarianism.
"The summit illustrated the unity of purpose in tackling religious intolerance and sectarianism, and the good work which continues across Scotland in delivering the long-term action needed to stamp out Scotland's shame.
"That is why I'm delighted to help launch the Old Firm Alliance initiative today. Both Old Firm clubs should be congratulated for working together to educate young people that sectarianism only engenders prejudice, hatred, suffering and intimidation.
"And the initiative, which is funded by Communities Scotland and delivered by the Glasgow Alliance, will give thousands of children in schools across Glasgow the chance to learn about how sport can encourage healthy lifestyles, raise self esteem whilst warning of the dangers of endorsing sectarian behaviours.
"Scotland is a modern, progressive and dynamic nation of opportunity. We can make our small nation better still by stamping out once and for all the bigoted behaviours and attitudes that tarnish Scotland's name."
The Old Firm Alliance is a pilot project, which will operate as a partnership between Celtic and Rangers Football Clubs. This is a community led programme focussing on building and developing stronger communities via playing football.
The Old Firm Alliance project has received £313,276 funding from Communities Scotland, the Scottish Executive's housing and regeneration agency.
Rangers and Celtic Football Clubs have contributed over £140,000 towards the programme.
The programme began in January and will run over 15 months. It moves to its second phase today.
