Parents get more say in their children's education
13/04/2005
Parents in East Lothian and Stirling have the chance to shape new legislation that will give them more of a say in their children's education.
Parents and teachers can hear more about the proposals and air their views on the draft Scottish Schools (Parental Involvement) Bill.
Seminars will be held at:
- Musselburgh Race Course on Wednesday, April 20 2005 from 7pm to 9pm
- Stirling Council Chambers, Viewforth on Thursday, April 21 2005 from 6.30 pm to 9pm
The plans, designed to strengthen parents' rights, would modernise parental representation and offer parents more choice and flexibility than the current School Board Act allows.
Education Minister Peter Peacock said:
"Our proposals are built around what parents have been telling us, they want more flexibility and choice on representation and more parents to be involved in the process.
"As ever, we consult very widely on proposed changes to the law and we will listen very carefully to what people say to us.
"We want all pupils to make the most of their education and we know that children achieve more when their parents take a real and close interest in their education.
"These changes will make it easier for more parents to get more involved. We want to modernise current arrangements to ensure they offer more and work for parents, pupils and schools in the 21st century."
Anyone interested in attending can register for the seminar by contacting Scottish Civic Forum, who are organising the event, on 0131 557 6767.
