Pupil census results

The Executive has today published Pupils in Scotland, September 2004, containing the results of the latest annual pupil census in publicly funded schools in Scotland.

The main findings for September 2004 are:

Primary

  • There were 2,217 primary schools, a reduction of 31 from 2003.
  • There were 398,100 pupils in primary schools, a two per cent reduction from 2003.
  • The average class size was 23.9, up from 23.7 in 2003.
  • There were 14,569 pupils with a Record of Needs or Individualised Education Plan, about four per cent of pupils.

Secondary

  • There were 386 secondary schools, the same as in 2003.
  • There were 318,065 pupils in secondary schools, a 0.1 per cent decrease from 2003.
  • There were 10,814 pupils with a Record of Needs or Individualised Education Plan, about three per cent of pupils.
  • About 76 per cent of pupils in S3 stayed on until S5.

Special

  • There were 190 special schools or units, an decrease of two from 2003.
  • There were 7,389 pupils in special schools, a four per cent reduction from 2003.
